Laura Fishman’s extensive training in abstract, figurative and landscape painting can be seen in her versatile range of works. The palimpsest-like canvases are born out of her acute perseverance with paint - scratched, wiped, dripped, and spattered to reveal bold works inspired by nature, archaeology and the very painted surface itself. With a deeply intuitive approach, layers of paint and mixed media are added, subtracted and reworked until a solution is reached. The results produce surfaces that are beautifully textured, multicoloured and visually engaging.

In her most recent work, Laura has made further explorations into the sculptural aspects of paint, pushing it into new dimensions. She uses a bright, playful and sophisticated palette that is partially or completely removed from the canvas, using pours and drips to tease out the plastic potential of the paint itself. With this major transformation Laura Fishman is moving away from working with the illusion of space and toward working with literal space, constructing objects that overlap two media - painting and sculpture. For Laura Fishman, her ceramics are directed towards curvilinear, geometric forms which come from the repetition of extruded clay that are continuously adapted and re-assembled. The design process begins by exploring how the material behaves, bends, breaks and reacts to gravity and pressure. The ideas start forming once the behavioural characteristics come together and the direction of development finds itself. During the making, a balance between form, colour and space is found to achieve a satisfying aesthetic; all outcomes are a celebration of an unsung process using the extraordinary material qualities of clay.

About the Artist
Laura Fishman earned her Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting in the United States from the State University of New York, studying American Abstract Expressionism, figurative and landscape painting. She continued her studies in textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and earned her MA in Fine Art at Middlesex University in London. Laura Fishman is founder of Creative Drawing Studio in North London and is a certified GOLDEN artist educator.
