Crabphone (2009)

Mechanimals.inc is a body of work which explores a combination of the natural and organic, and the artificial, mechanical world.

I am obsessed with the notion that man-made objects take inspiration from organic living creatures, and attempt to utilise their characteristics for the benefit of human beings.

This inspired me to create a series of fictional ‘products’, each inspired by animals, which are designed to serve a purpose for consumers.

This image depics the 'Crabphone' - a mobile telephone designed to follow the notion that you can hear the sea through a seashell. The Crabphone uses the crab's shell to amplify the sound, so that it is possible to 'call the sea.'

Artist Profile

As an artist, I am drawn to the surreal or unusual, preferring to examine areas of human life which are barely tangible, or fictional. My work often creates questions about humans as a whole, and our intentions as we interact with the world around us.
My preferred medium is analogue photography, which I favour due to the feeling that it is more ‘honest’ and true-to-life. It also gives me the freedom to manipulate the negatives, creating a completely new and unique photograph.

I am also interested in the industrial side of modern life, which itself is both a creative and destructive force.
