A photograph is an intermediary between a dream and a memory. This work, relying on such a concept aims to explore the boundaries of the thinking towards the reproduced image. The primary concern is to create original, one off works much
like that of a painter; where each work possesses a romantic individual authenticity that cannot be exactly reproduced twice and is often only visible in its actual presence.
To create the work Gilbert chemically develops the work initially with formulas dating from the 1800's so as to create a canvas to work upon. The images themselves are then rendered with carful application of brushed on ink.
This technique combines both the crystal clarity of a photograph with the expression and physical gesture of painting.
This current set entitled under the banner of 'postproduction' is of post-soviet architecture and villages in Eastern Europe, referencing the dreams of the early avant-gard that today are relegated to a distant romantic dream since the
collapse of the grate socialist experiment in the late 80's. The nature of the techniques employed lends itself to these images, allowing each to impart its own unheard story and engage the viewer on its own terms.
