Artist's Talk with Sophie Derrick and William Rea

Last night saw the very first artist talk held at DegreeArt’s Execution Room. Artist in residence, Sophie Derrick, spoke alongside Senior Lecturer at Leeds University, William Rea about the fictional tribe she has created during her residency.

For the past week I have been continuing to build my tribe up, going through my ritual of; mixing the colours, applying Vaseline, painting myself, photographing, scraping off the paint, and cleaning myself. This has resulted in five new tribe members, but the main development of the week has been the integration of pattern into my backgrounds. At the beginning of this residency I was thinking about patterns and how I could incorporate them into my Tribe, as I thought it would give some unification to the pieces and add a tribal feel.
