We have been pondering and wondering about the Twelve Days of Christmas (mostly in the hope that we may be able to string out the festivities for as long as possible) and it turns out that in England we have been celebrating the twelve days since medieval times.
Traditionally Christmas lasted far longer, until at least February the 2nd, but because workers were needed back in the fields, the period of fun and partying was shortened to end on Epiphany Monday, or Plough Day as it became known.
