TEN REASONS WHY WE LOVE VYNER STREET

DegreeArt has been based on Vyner Street in E2 for over five years and we have witnessed many businesses and galleries come and go here on the borders of Bethnal Green. Throughout these years we have celebrated great neighbours, fantastic exhibtion openings, and wildly popular First Thursdays.

It always excites us to meet people who hear whispers of a creative street full of arts and culture, and when they do come down they are thrilled to have found this pocket of the east end art scene.

As Galleries move and new businesses come into a street that we call home, we thought it right to list the top 10 reasons why this street is truly a culture hub!

NUMBER ONE - The History

Previously known as John Street, with its cobbled paving and conservation status, Vyner Street (renamed after the Vyner family in 1902) is continuing to develop and grow as it has done for over 140 years. As businesses who chose to (or were unable to stay put) have left, in their place have come interesting and complimentary companies who will leave their own legacy.  Read more on the history of Vyner Street here.

NUMBER TWO - Accessibility

The fact that we can be open to and welcome the public 7 days a week and it is no longer only a ‘by appointment only’ area for those ‘in the know’ but is inviting and welcoming to all. No longer do we have to rescue distraught tourists unable to find the doorbell of the gallery they have travelled so far to see!

NUMBER THREE - The Eateries

Ombra – the new Venetian restaurant which alongside the wealth of varied restaurants and cafes that have sprung up over the past year within a stone’s throw, has transformed our lunchtimes! Now the grand re-opening of refurbished  Bistrotheque, (based opposite Vyner Street on Wadeson Street) has occured, we are relived this staple part of our diets has returned!

NUMBER FOUR - A Hub of Exciting Art

For the ever increasing opportunities the street provides emerging and estalished artists to exhibit and have their work seen by both the public and collectors, giving them unparalled exhibiting experience and exposure. Vyner Street is where visitors can truly make a discovery.

NUMBER FIVE - Our Neighbours

Our eclectic (and we are fairly certain unique) mix of neighbours include not only artists and galleries but design studios, musicians, warehouses, residents, workshops, a pubs a restaurant, film studios, a taxi repair garage (sorry if we missed you off the list)...

NUMBER SIX - The Location

Its location, which is smack bang in the Regents Canal path, is just five minutes’ walk from the newly regenerated gem that is Victoria Park and the ever bustling Broadway Market. No wonder residential properties are selling for millions here and we hope the new owners will love art as much as we do.

NUMBER SEVEN - First Thursdays

The amazing First Thursdays which made Vyner Street the heart of its monthly attraction, is in our top ten especially for its dedication to making art accessible to thousands of visitors. Our biggest thanks to both teams at TimeOut and the Whitechapel Gallery.

NUMBER EIGHT - The Victory Pub

The street’s oldest resident, The Victory Public House (dedicated fundraisers for FSID), which was the sole survivor of the bomb damage of the late 1930s inflicted on the street that saw it transformed from mostly residential to commercial. This is a pub not to be missed and an East End institution.

NUMBER NINE - The Community

For the strong community that has always been so welcoming and supportive of those willing to engage and be friendly.

NUMBER TEN - It's Thriving and We Just Love It!

Finally, we love Vyner Street as it continues to be where original art, created by truly emerging artists, is accessible in galleries and spaces who don't depend on a postcode for their success and who welcome all visitors, be they tourists, collectors, artist, or enthusiasts.

Those who say that Vyner St is dead, are gravely mistaken.

We have shared some brilliant memories and look forward to years of art openings, events, and happenings.

If you haven't visited the street yet, be sure to come down on a First Thursday.

See you soon!
