The Thames is wide and fast-flowing near this pier, and I felt I needed to make 2 connecting drawings of it to capture the shapes I liked best.

My drawings reflect a need to escape the hectic pace of city life and to make time for contemplation of the natural world. Devoid of intrusive figures, they attempt to conjure up elements of the sublime in images of water, fields and forests.
I am fond of the inticate natural patterns found in these themes and the contrast between light and dark. Working monochromatically enhances this contrast and references archival black and white photography.
The Thames is a constant source of material, its reflective surface providing an infinite choice of patterning, its relentless movement symbolic of both perpetual change and continuity. In contrast, the totemic trees and sweeping views of the wilds of western British Columbia transport me back to my native Canada for the 11 months of the year between visits.
