Carpe Diem -Enjoy and thank for food-

(Interactive installation)

This work consists of 4 fish print images of dead fish swimming as they were alive, one plate for dinner and a table. The exhibition took place in crypt gallery at the St PANCRAS CHURCH. The old crypt at this church is converted to a gallery and this fact added a special implication towards my work.

This work implies the relationship between Life and death, which are close to each other and also connected to our everyday life. The title of this work is “Carpe diem” which means, "seize a day" in Latin. This work is based on the idea of Carpe diem, which is as follows: death stays closer with us in everyday life and we cannot avoid the fate. It might happen anytime any moment so enjoy the life at present while we can.

I provided an assortment of Sashimi as a part of the installation to offer the viewers a chance to experience the idea of Carpe diem. The nature of this particular installation, which is consuming food at crypt/ graveyard, is a perfect opportunity for us to experience the pleasure in life, at a place which represents death.

Artist Profile

HIDEYUKI SHOJI

1978 Born in Yamagata, JAPAN

Lives and work in UK

Hideyuki Shoji is a Japanese artist who works and lives in London. He was born in Yamagata Japan and he started his carrier of artist as a printmaking artist after graduated the Master degree at Yamagata University in Japan. He studied abroad to England and graduated from the Chelsea College of Art and Design with a BA (Hons).

A recurring theme in Hideyuki’s work involves curiosity in and observation of everyday life. To make the everyday apparent, his work makes an absurd alteration to an object before putting it back into an everyday life situation.

Hideyuki’s works often dealt with print and sculpture: using commonplace materials and suggesting alternative points of view within a social situation. To further exploit the realm of the unnoticed and overlooked within the complexities of everyday life, his work has become more performative recently. The works are no longer purely sculptural. He intervenes in a social structure with a performative activity, highlighting through a funny situation the otherwise everyday.
