My work is driven by both a passion for materials; I am fascinated by their properties and qualities, and an interest in objects and our relationship with them. In particular, it is the unremarkable yet familiar materials and objects that preoccupy me, things found in my own environment. They may appear to be insignificant, but in fact they have much to say. After all, our everyday lives are interwoven physically and emotionally with these every day things. Objects have the power to generate a stream of thoughts, ideas and image that go beyond their initial beginnings. Though they will always speak of us as people and as a society, as that is what objects do; they symbolize human life.

My practice involves the manipulation and the re-presentation of materials and objects as a way to provoke the viewer into re-thinking them. Where and how an object is presented or seen changes the way we respond to it. In particular if things are shown in unexpected ways we will look at them differently. They will demand a level of attention and close scrutiny not usually given to the objects themselves. I am essentially plucking things from obscurity, as it seems that it is only through the abstraction of objects from the world that they and we belong that we can begin to see and understand that world.

My current work involves casting objects using tissue paper, PVA and water. The result is something that hovers between drawing and sculpture. It is not immediately clear what you are looking at but once you identify the object you can identify with it. They are a reminder of life yet at the same time you are aware of their temporality, the tissue paper being fragile, ephemeral and ethereal. The white castings in particular have a poetic air to them. The black evoke depth and a heaviness that defies their material makeup. All have a solitary presence.

The pieces reference tangible objects and there is a presence/absence narrative to them. They are also a study of form, function, material and space. The space around the object being an integral part of the work as neither the object or the space around the object can exist without the other.
