Artist Profile

I am interested in creating reflected or fragmentary images, often using found objects and surfaces, which engage in a dialogue between the art object, time and memory.

My work creates a relationship between the surface of the piece, the viewer and the surrounding space and questions how the viewer’s perception can alter. My recent work is concerned with the perception of the self and uses objects as surfaces to reflect figures in a space. I layer oil paint and varnish to create a highly reflective gloss surface, which behaves like a distorted mirror, reflecting the viewer and the space around them. My paintings are based around the idea that the viewer brings their own perception to the work and I use colour to investigate this.

Light plays an important role in my work for example; sunlight reveals the vibrant colours beneath the reflections cast onto the surfaces. The true colours of my work are only ever partially visible and are always subject to the distraction of the changing movement of their surroundings. The surfaces allow the viewer a partially fragmented reflection, depicting fleeting images and moments in time, which are held momentarily on the surface before they change and disappear.

My glass pieces use photographs I have taken over time and are often places where I have lived, and which describe the changeable nature of memory.
