Information 'Annie Chapman' Acrylic on Canvas 2007 Kim is currently developing concepts considering the notion of female victim hood. These paintings from the ‘Prostitute’ series feature hand painted fragments of Prostitutes’ death certificates on canvas. The paintings explore the ephemera surrounding London’s infamous ’Jack the Ripper’ murder victims; the first murders to widely captivate the general populace through the printed media. The women who were killed attained a level of fame in death that it is likely would never have been afforded to them if they had not crossed the path of the killer. Drawing on the language of documentary, museum exhibits and ‘real crime’ books and websites, the paintings explore the significance of small scraps of recorded information and the transformative power of this ephemeral material. Fragments of the victim’s death certificates track the progress of the serial killer not only in his immediate actions of killing but in the wider phenomenon of becoming a mythical monster. These banal pieces of officious paper follow the narrative of tragic events that have become distanced by time and the parodying and misrepresentation by popular culture and myth. The certificates bear over us condemning the women to their place as footnotes in popular history. About the Victim: Born Eliza Anne Smith in September 1841 and was described as a sober and steady going woman. She was 45 years old at time of death and believed to be suffering with a brain tumor and tuberculosis at the time. The Processions found on her body at the post mortem: Scrap of muslin, one small toothcomb, one comb in a paper case, and a scrap of envelope. |
