Information EXPERIMENTAL FINALIST Peter Watkins University of Westminster, 39600 Untitled 6, Hope of Additional Light / Now We See a Darkness’ 60 x 60 cm, Limited Edition of 3 My ideas were initially grounded in considering the tension between intuition and rationalisation. I wanted to communicate something less predetermined by conceptuality, and rather focus on creating something intuitively and emotively driven. Following some initial experiments I became interested in the ephemeral possibilities of lightness and darkness: the ability to create small visual events that were essentially direct manipulations of my field of vision, only to subsequently loose them again as soon as the lighting was switched off. The process of painting with light allows for a different visual conditioning for each and every scene that is altered—indeed, every scene demands its own, idiosyncratic treatment. By working under these conditions I believe that something more emotionally honest and heartfelt can flourish, intentionally refraining from any over-descriptive meaning or conceptual certainty. |
