| Profile |
Ruthie’s work explores themes of unusual perspective and the female form in conjunction with one another. Her work is playful in terms of form and colour and subject matter is both representational of pivotal and mundane moments of, and in life. ![]() Ruthie was featured in August's Who's Jack Magazine 3D is explored on a 2D surface with thread and fabric, encouraging the natural fall of light on all canvases to highlight the forms created by the thread. I grew up in a small town in Hertfordshire and stilll go back there a lot to chill out. I have lived in England forever and moved to London when I started art college. I love cappuccino froth, chocolate marmite on toast and champagne. I HATE peanut butter, it's disgusting! I cannot wait for summer every year, although winter is good for snow and log fires if you can find them. When I was little I used to make clothes for Barbie, and spend hours designing clothes on paintshop – somebody should have showed me photoshop a lot sooner, it took hours. I don’t really know why or how you come to like doing art, I think I just like the look of what I create – If I don’t get the form right I won’t like what I’m doing, same with the colour, it's fundamental to my work. |

What is your favourite film of all time? Kill Bill Vol I and II, because Uma makes the best violent, maternal, comical, sad superhero ever, for Daryl Hannah because she is wonderful and because i really do want to own one of those yellow jumpsuits – blood or no blood Or no blood What music are you currently listening to and why? Hot chip – because I’m always dancing to them with my sisters Muse, Bloc Party, Amy Winehouse, Css, Scouting For Girls, and The Cardigans – bring them back! The Beach Boys, Jackson Browne, Prince, Michael Jackson, Blondie, The Cure Which living artists do you most admire and why? Oh you mean “arty” artists, well probably Tracey Emin because of the textile International Woman bags she did and the TENT ‘All the people I’ve ever slept with – tell a story makes for so much more interesting art. Which deceased artist do you most admire and why? Dali – for a mental mind that thought up dreamscape mental art Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why? The Sensation Exhibition – What shocks Us?’ – The YBA’s certainly made an impact, and what a perfect concept creating an ‘over 18’s’ room – made art trips far more exciting when you’re 16 and want to break the rules What is the question you get asked most frequently about your work and how do you answer it? Does it irritate you that the photos of your work don’t do justice to the real thing? – YES! Come into The Empire Gallery to see it in the flesh! What/ who inspired you to be an artist? My art teacher, my friends and my ability to be too much of a dreamer sometimes! Can you tell us about where you make your art and what if any the significance of this location is? I make my work in front of the TV or with the radio on – it a therapeutic way of relaxing and feeling “artistic” at the same time. What do like most about being an artist? It de-stresses me and infiltrates into everything else I do in a creative aspect. What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date? I don’t think I’ve had a ‘greatest’ one yet – I’ll get back to you! What are your plans for the coming year? 2 exhibitions – one in March and one later in the year – and getting a few commissions, if I can get some Press. |
