One of my favourite past times is rummaging around in junk markets, looking for treasure. I love the feeling of discovering something that has its own sense of history. This inspires me to make work using objects that hold symbolic value, giving them a new lease of life, creating atmosphere in a new context. Making art allows me to express ideas in a visual way where words would normally fail me. What is your favourite film of all time? Pans Labyrinth. What music are you currently listening to and why? I don’t have a particular type of music – I listen to whatever makes me happy! But right now I am really into With Kings of Convenience. Which living artists do you most admire and why? I love Louise Bourgeois visual language and its one the most influences my work. I also admire how she constantly manages to evolve making her work as relevant today as it was 70 years ago. Which deceased artist do you most admire and why? Frida Kahlo – I admire her use of colour and symbols, which at first seem simplistic and beautiful, however when you begin to interpret the symbolic depictions, a darker meaning unravels. Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why? Chirstoph Buchel’s Hotel exhibition at the Hauser and Wirth Copper Mill, East London was truly inspirational to me as it allowed the viewer to enter a world almost like physically entering the artists mind. What is the question you get asked most frequently about your work and how do you answer it? A universal question to all artists including myself will always be:- What does your work mean? When asked that question, I always suggest that the meaning is within the eye of the viewer - I prefer to create work that evokes a sense of atmosphere in the eye of the viewer by using culturally symbolic references that allow the viewer to piece their own meaning together by free association. Even though I might start off with a personal narrative I try to create a visual language that leaves the work open to interpretation. What/ who inspired you to be an artists? I initially started off at fashion college before crossing over into fine art. My ex Tutor at LCF opened my mind and inspired me to think outside the box and express exactly what I thought. My time at fashion college was really important in shaping my influences, and this is still relevant to the work I make now. Can you tell us about where you make your art and what if any the significance of this location is? Most of the work I do either takes place in my basement or at least starts there. The quality of the interior is atmospheric and I like to translate this in my work, however recently I have tried to refine my work by taking key objects and models into studio spaces, this allows me to create my own space where I have complete control over the outcome. What do like most about being an artist? Being able to express whatever I can’t put into words and manifesting it as a visual interpretation. What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date? I am constantly striving to better my work. Every time I finish a piece I feel a great sense achievement, by what I hope to achieve is to constantly push forward and allow my work to evolve over time. Being shortlisted for the DegreeArt.com Signature photography Awards was a great moment of achievement in my artistic practice so far. What are your plans for the coming year? I hope to graduate with a first and be completely satisfied with my degree show – although for an artist complete satisfaction of a piece of work is rare! I plan to progress on to an MA and keep developing my skills. |
