Forthcoming Events

20th Aug 2008 - 7th Sep 2008
Name: Gullwing Mary and the Dannevirke Divas by David Le Fleming
Venue: 30 Vyner Street London E2 9DQ

DegreeArt.com presents David Le Fleming's 2008 Show:
Gullwing Mary and the Dannevirke Divas by David Le Fleming

20th August - 8 September 12-6pm daily
Private View: 21st August 6-9pm
First Thursday: 4th September 6-9pm

David Le Flemming's work for the most part is conceptual in that each piece is hinged with some sort of inherent visual pun. The characters are central to the themes, with close attention to detail being payed to the faces which then peaters out to flat colour fields of the surrounding environment.

7th Aug 2008 - 11th Aug 2008
Name: New Paintngs by Andy Wicks and David Northedge
Venue: 30 Vyner Street London E2 9DQ

7th - 10th August 12-6pm daily
Private View and First Thursday: 7th August 6-9pm

Semi figurative smears and acidic geometric fields combine in Andy Wicks and David Northedge's New Paintings. Both artists articulate a wasted dystopian landscape in which Wicks' liquid thin veils of colour corrupt and obscure floating geometric forms as though we are seeing alien planets through toxic condensation gathered on the window of our bathyscaphe. Northedge's semi abstract islands of slickly smeared silhouettes, scarred surfaces and flat planes of colour, depict an ambiguous junction between the figurative and the abstract. The cultivated application of paint gives his work an attraction which contradicts the apocalyptic subject matter.

7th Aug 2008 - 11th Aug 2008
Name: New Paintings by Fiona Athanassaki
Venue: The Vestry Room 30 Vyner Street London E2 9DQ

Elements

7th - 10th August 12-6pm daily
Private View and First Thursday: 7th August 6-9pm

Fiona is a London based painter and this is her follow on exhibition after her successful solo show at the Spitz Gallery in 2006.

She works with a mixture of paint mediums, using traditional techniques such as gilding combined with a variety of other materials to explore their interaction, contrasts and textures producing images radiant with colour and vibrancy. Her painting is influenced by landscape primarily from the Mediterranean. Using simple abstract forms and colour, surfaces are worked on with glazes to build up a layered transparency and to create a sensation of depth. These paintings are explosive experiments into the world of colour.

TAKE AWAY ART

Take Away Art
is the latest project by DegreeArt.com, an art exhibition that allows you to buy the artwork off the wall and take it away, wrapped and ready to put under the Christmas tree.

On Saturday 10th December, DegreeArt.com will be working in collaboration with South London youth charity, Roots and Shoots, to present, just in time for Christmas, an extra special collection of contemporary artwork by DegreeArt’s student and graduate artists. The twist is that a selection of the pieces for sale have been curated and created by the young, artistic trainees at Roots and Shoots.

Roots and Shoots, the host of this exhibition, is an environmental training project for young people. Backed by a lottery grant and several high profile donors, Roots and shoots has recently moved to a new, ecologically sound, solar- powered building in Lambeth. It is located between the Imperial War Museum and a 0.5acre wildlife garden and pond which has proven to be an extremely valuable resource for local schools.

Prices of the paintings, photographs, etchings, prints and sculptures on sale, start from £35 with a percentage of all sales being donated to Roots and Shoots.

Opening hours: 11 am – 4pm.

An exhibition of paintings by emerging artist Minna Georgieva concerning Global Warming

The artist's paintings are inspired by nature and natural forces such as mists, rainstorms, sunsets, thunder and occasionally by mythology. This exhibition has evolved as she has felt impelled to express her concerns in a series of paintings after struggling to find inspiration in the urban surroundings, and being forced to travel miles to explore when once it was on her doorstep where she hopes it will one day be again.

in conjunction with TimeOut's First Thursdays

The Empire Gallery
30 Vyner STreet
London
E2 9DQ

Curated by Robert Leech, 33% Pork is the third in a series of shows dedicated to an extended idea of painting. Featuring four artists who's work is bright, bold and positive, the show explores, paint, material and colour as well as their possible cultural spin-offs. The show's title references ideas about the purity of paint, but treats it as more of a backdrop than a framework. Exploring paint's ability to mimic itself the work sits somewhere amongst gaudy, stylish and thoughtful. Featuring 2-dimensional work alongside liquid sculpture, velvet-lined boxes and digital imagery, the show brings paint away from the canvas, undermining the medium and celebrating it at the same time.

Andy Owen’s debut solo exhibition of abstract painting is inspired by the mesmerising frenzy of media imagery that we are exposed to daily.  Evolving from Op Art with a painterly edge Virtual Viscera contrasts the modern urban experience of technology with the human touch.
