The overarching concerns in my practice revolve around universal human experiences of fragility, isolation, and loss. My current work, A Mind Map, is an installation comprised of over 40 paintings in oil on canvas that possess an implied personal narrative combined with an invitation for the viewer to generate a fiction. In this work, as in the majority of my practice, I reference the relationship between painting and photography, autobiography and fiction. The paintings begin with a desire to express a feeling of familiarity followed closely by a sense that this place cannot actually be known; the work presents a set of clues to an interior journey but not the whole story. It is an exploration of presence through absence. I explore an uncanny, fractured reality that offers an opportunity to develop new narratives from the absence that resonates in the interiors. Individually, the works are deceptively complex, with an added layer of dissonance via the use of embroidery thread. In this piece in particular, the stitching hints at a drawing underneath the paint that seems relates to the image painted over it, but they are not quite the same. The oddness of the interior fosters an open quality in the work; openness is of great importance to me because it is necessary to allowing fresh interpretations of the work. The paintings are a key for a map that is never actually presented but is there to be imagined.
