To sum up my work in sentence it would be 'romantic realism'
My work takes a revisionist path back to the emotional expression of ‘Romanticism’, not so much as contextualising such traditions to the present but showing a continuation for the Romantic traditions for the re-evaluation of the scenery and the discovery of its symbolic qualities. Considering the past in a new light to discover new perspectives on what is happening today, and to characterize the social and environmental concerns of today’s modern society.
A common theme that runs through my work is existential escapism from the constraints of the modern world by looking for Romanticism in the common place. All of my painting are based on my own personal experiences from childhood to adulthood through to my everyday observations, I focus on places in the surrounding landscape in order to seek idyllic environments for solitary contemplation. In such constructed landscapes I aim to engage with the viewer, encouraging them to project their own personal experiences, to create an ‘ideal world’ for them to temporarily escape from the demanding routines and pressures of everyday life.
