Light and its transitional movement sculpts our perception on objects, changing their qualities, creating new textures and patterns. Capturing the real life situational picture, I look for contrast in the viewpoint of everyday snapshots of the eye that may otherwise pass us by, similar to cloud watching I suppose, to then abstract through medium manipulation, placement and colour.
Sarting with photography, I use the camera as a tool to capture that passing moment, when the light is just right, casting a ray to cause a highlight, accentuations of contrast within the image in that moment in time. The manipulation of these images, whether that be darkroom or digital processes, abstract and manipulate these moments further to highlight the beauty that is so often missed in our surroundings, where pattern is constantly present. I work for the present movement not only in what I am capturing, but also the process through which I create, with unrestrained energy followed by a contrast in process, medium or image to each compliment the other.
Graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2012, the Textile Design process to which my work is informed in terms of editing process; colour, composition and collection, not only makes my mind seek contrast within the singular image but the compliments of colours and form placed beside it.
The exploration of new materials and innovation of ideas and technology is a big informer of my work, using any medium that comes to hand to create. Exploring digital as a medium is a great tool to capture and process the wide range of tools I explore to reinvent an aesthetic or image, which are often revisited and combined to create something new. In recent work I have stripped back down to painting on canvas, a way of capturing light and movement in a more intimate way in terms of process but often leaving results of more abstract interpretations of colour and light, moving that moment on from a blink of an eye to a new way of looking at things, a fresh perspective.
