Interview

What is your favourite film of all time?

Escaflowne, it's a masterpiece...beautifully drawn, excellent score and fantastic story line. I'm a bit of an anime nut, and this one has always just spoken to me and mesmerised me by its brilliance.

What music are you currently listening to and why?

At the moment I tend to have my ipod on shuffle a lot, I'm a big fan of rock but i'm pretty open minded to any genre of music.

Which living artists do you most admire and why?

I have a lot of admiration for the abstract artists such as the paintings of Rebecca Horn, Ellen Gallagher, Karl Otto Gotz, Georges Matthieu, Antoni Tapies and Helen Frankenthaler as they continually inspire me.

Which deceased artist do you most admire and why?

I'm sad to say the recently deceased Cy Twombly. A true legend. His work spans 5 decades and I have great respect and appreciation for him. He was the first artist I got into when I decided to go the abstract route. There is something about his work that just draws me into it time and time again both visually and conceptually.

Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why?

I remember seeing the Cy Twombly retrospective at the tate while I was on my degree and it having a massive impact on me. Especially his ‘Quattro Stagioni’ series or four seasons. My favourite piece was autumn, it drew me in with its powerful and visceral colours. His application of paint was so expressive and his massive scale had such a theatricality to it which I adored.

What is the question you get asked most frequently about your work and how do you answer it?

What's it about?

Strangely enough this is a question I have diffcuilty answering because due to my work being about my emotional states and dreams etc I find explaining the exact meaning very difficult.

What / who inspired you to be an artist?

I was inspired by Chris Bucklow, he was an artist I met when I was in college that I was fortunate enough to have the oppurtunity to do work experience with for a week. He's the reason I wanted to seriously pursue art as a career.

Can you tell us about where you make your art and what if any the significance of this location is?

I make my work at my home in Bristol, I find this works for me because inspration can hit me at any moment, perhaps waking up after a dream or having some emotional turmoil I feel I need to express; it works for me to always have a paintbrush close to hand as it seems my paintings and my life are so closely connected I would probably find it difficult to have a separate working space like a studio.

What do you like most about being an artist?

As self indulgent as it is my work is a sort of therapy for me it helps me express myself, I love the freedom of self expression I get from painting. I also love the feeling when I look at a painting when its finished and knowing I just made that.

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?

I still say the first ever award I got, when I was in school  probably about year 10, I got an artist of the year award, It was the first trophy I ever won and meant the world to me. I think thats when I realized I was really good at this whole art thing.

What are your plans for the coming year?

To exhbit as much as I can, get myself out there and to take any and all oppurtunities that come my way.

Artist's statement

My work has roots in psychoanalysis particularly Freudian theory, it is about the unconscious and sometimes blind folded mark making and its implications. It also speaks about visual memory through the process of layering, the constant application of paint over paint speaks of the construction of memory how some things are lost and replaced by others and in the destruction of the old there is a sense of re-birthing and creation of the new.

In a sense my paintings are becoming a mental space for my thoughts and emotions both conscious and unconscious. These two sides of my being are constantly in conflict with one another. The canvas allows for me to resolve my own mental issues and in a sense each painting is a little part of me.

My marks are heavily influenced by forms of writing such as automatic writing, calligraphy, graffiti and the archi-trace. Readings, particularly by the likes of Descatres and Derrida. My work speaks of pre-ontological and primitive ways of making mark, of the moment of spontaneity and wants to express gestural moments unhindered. I am interested by the notion of taking something not corporeal and making it physical such as dreams, thoughts, emotions and memory.

I am interested in the page format which is rooted in my obsession with forms of writing, particularly the fold in the middle. This has lead to works which speak about the void or Plato’s “Chora” which describes space, or a place in space; and the environment in which forms materialize.  It can be said that my paintings originates from “Chora” and are also representing it in some cases. The void also speaks to me as a limitless space such as a mirror which to me almost creates another parallel existence. I am interested in reflecting myself in the canvas both metaphorically and literally and the narcissistic qualities of the reflective surface. The void also has very phallic implications and has lead to an interest in ideas of feminism such as the theories of Gilles de Leuze or Helene Cixous.
