Profile

My Senior school education was at Brighton and Hove High School for Girls, which is part of the Girls Day School Trust. At Brighton Hove and Sussex Sixth form college, I took Photography in my second year at AS level and gained an A grade. This year’s study has literally changed my life as I discovered my great love of the subject.

I spent 2 years at Brighton and Hove City College, and successfully gained a BTEC National Diploma in Photography earning 2 Distinctions and a Merit.

I have spent the last two years at the University of East London studying for my BA (Hons) Degree in Photography, after having transferred from Brighton University where I passed the first stage of the degree. I chose to go to the UEL as it was in London where the action is and photographic opportunities are. I originally intended to go straight on to study for a Masters but I feel now that I need to have some experience in the Work place and so am going to wait a little while. I would love to study for a Masters but what with Fee increases at the moment this just isn't possible. I am still considering doing an MA and also looking into the possiblitly of studying in the USA and shall be grateful if anyone could assist me with a bursary.

During my studies I have found that my forte is with landscapes and travel photography and I hope to specialise in this area. I have my own website called http://www.hytphotos.com . Recently I also published a book through Blurb with images from the Cuckmere Haven East Sussex series. In 2009 I won the award Landscape photographer of the year with DegreeArt.com .

I have now completed my final year and now hold my BA Hons degree in Photography. I was awarded a travel bursary to go to Helsinki.

At the moment I am taking a gap year and shall be concerntrating on expanding my final years project called  'Everything Is Not What It Seems'.

All images are made to order.

Exhibitions

In 2009 I was Signature Art Award Finalist for Landscapes and succesfully won this category. I have completed serveral exhibitions while studing at the UEL. The first one in December 2009 was - 'I'll Be Your Mirror' where my image was chosen to promote the show. The next show was 'Realisation' which was held at the Rag Factory off of Brick Lane in November 2010. As for my final year my work was featured in the degree show at the University of East London at the beginning of June which I Co-curated. Then in late June I exhibited in Free Range at The Old Truemans Brewary.

Interview

What is your favourite film of all time?

The Twilight Saga

What music are you currently listening to and why?

Katy Perry, Taylor Swift. These artists are both upbeat and help when editing photographs.

Which living artists do you most admire and why?

Joel Sternfeld, I have recently discovered this artist and although his work is based in the USA mine is becoming very similar, especially with the subject matter for my finals. His images have very strong compostion and the way they are lit gives them a romanticised feel.

Which deceased artist do you most admire and why?

Ansel Adams has to be my most admired photographer because of the sheer majesty in his images. They are awe inspiring and I wish some day to go to California and take the landscapes which he made most famous.

Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why?

It has to be the Twilight Exhibition at the V&A. This had the most impact on me because it was thought provoking and inspiring.

What is the question you get asked most frequently about your work and how do you answer it?

My recent project is about how a landscape to an innocent viewer only sees the beauty whereas the real hidden meaning is that in that selected location something sinister had occured all be it murder, suicide or a car crash. The answer I give is that I want the viewer to question what exactly they are looking at and that everything isn't always what it seems. I think the reason why this subject fasinates me is because earlier in 2010  I had come close to my own death and made me realise life is very precious and things may look okay on the surface but deep down everything isn't always what you see.

What / who inspired you to be an artist?

When I was younger a very good friend of the family gave me a  35mm camera and she told that me one day maybe I would become the next 'David Bailey.' I always loved taking photos as a child and when the opportunity came for me to take As Level Photography I jumped at the chance and haven't looked back from that day to this. My style has changed quite a lot since then and I have found that my forte is Landscape photography.

Can you tell us about where you make your art and what if any the significance of this location is?

II mainly take my images in and around Sussex but I am very lucky to be able to go abroad and experience different Cultures and am never without my Camera. At the moment I am mainly concentrating on looking at locations that may look beautiful but  have a sinister twist and are mainly places where someone has lost there life in some way.

What do you like most about being an artist?

I like being able to have freedom to do my own thing and learning from that.

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?

It would have to be winning landscape photographer of the year with yourselves in 2009.

What are your plans for the coming year?

My main aim for this year is to concerntrate on expanding on the series 'Everything Is Not What It Seems'.
