Interview

What is your favourite film of all time?

Roman Holiday, can’t beat a classic film with Audrey.

What music are you currently listening to and why?

Anything goes and depends on my mood. And quite often silence is the best thing…

Which living artists do you most admire and why?

I love the honesty in Jenny Saville’s work, the way she effortlessly captures human figure and expressions.

Which deceased artist do you most admire and why?

Rembrant van Rijn. I remember walking through the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam admiring all the beautiful paintings by so many well-known masters until I entered the great hall where his paintings are displayed. Suddenly all the great works of art I’d seen on the way seemed insignificant and bland. The way he captures light, human expressions, colour is just amazing. I was stunned.

Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why?

It was in Bratislava, in my home country a number of years ago. A group of artists were exhibiting and unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the one that created his work of art. It was a small room with mirror floor and ceiling, books stuck on both sides of the room and a narrow plank you walk on to get to the other side. I felt dizzy walking through the room with mirrored books going endlessly up and down creating a sense of a great height and depth. A very strange feeling. And a very exciting idea.

What is the question you get asked most frequently about your work and how do you answer it?

“What inspired you?” And well – that just depends on what I am working on at that time. Currently it is the Time itself.

What / who inspired you to be an artist?

My dad. He is an artist, so was my grandfather and my brother makes ceramics so I got only support and very needed criticism from many members of my family. Drawing, painting, creating was what I was expected to do and loved since I was very little.

Can you tell us about where you make your art and what if any the significance of this location is?

I moved to the far North of Scotland, Caithness last summer. The landscape, light, atmosphere is amazing here, a perfect environment to create. I use as my studio a spare room and also the garage which is ideal for any messy work.

What do you like most about being an artist?

Having the freedom to do what I truly love.

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?

Having the courage to give up my job and go back to finish my degree in Art. Something I should have done many years ago.

And I am very proud to have an opportunity to take part in the ArtHouse exhibition.

What are your plans for the coming year?

Immerse myself in making artwork. I have a lot of ideas for painting as the landscape here is so inspiring and also sculptural work is on my mind a lot. I am working on both more or less simultaneously.

Artist's statement

We perceive the notion of time in different ways. Scientists, philosophers, writers and artists have been trying to make sense of it for centuries, yet we still do not actually know how it works. We travel in time through our dreams and memories, reliving versions of moments past. Can we bring them into the future? Or is everything happening simultaneously? Is all just one?

Exploring perceptions of time fascinates me and brings new discoveries and problems every day. My practice involves moving through memories and constructing pieces from found objects, both natural and man-made and from ephemera that help to trigger a memory of a particular moment. Preserving these recollections in artwork through various media can take me back in even more vivid ways. My work is evolving towards sculpture although I still work in painting, drawing and printmaking medias. The concept of my work is based on the perception of time, memory and time travel from scientific, cultural as well as nostalgic point of view.
