Profile

Although my work is figurative, I don’t make my drawings from real life, they are often just studies of images found on the internet, or in books. The idea of bastardising figurative techniques traditionally and romantically associated with draughtsmanship to then distort the origins and reality of an image or object, is both a source of amusement to me and of humour in the work.

Interview

What is your favourite film of all time?

Latcho Drom, about Romany music. Beautiful.

What music are you currently listening to and why?

Benjamin Wetherill – Laura. Because it is my favourite album of 2008.

Which living artists do you most admire and why?

My friends who after graduating set up a studio in Nottingham and put in regular exhibitions and work super-hard.

Which deceased artist do you most admire and why?

Van Gogh, for obvious reasons I think.

Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why?

In a town called Olomouc in the Czech Republic there was an exhibition on Czech Art Brut which was fantastic. I like the simple honesty and raw emotion of Outsider Artists.

What is the question you get asked most frequently about your work and how do you answer it?

I don’t get asked questions about my work. I guess people ask how long the drawings take sometimes. The answer to which is usually a vague ‘several hours’ as I don’t tend to know.

What / who inspired you to be an artist?

Videogames.

Can you tell us about where you make your art and what if any the significance of this location is?

Either at home or in a studio, if I have access to one. I like to work at home in private.

What do you like most about being an artist?

The opportunity to have a creative outlet.

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?

Making pictures I am proud of that other people might enjoy.

What are your plans for the coming year?

To work hard.
