Leah Michellé
Interview
What is your favourite film of all time?
Old School.
What music are you currently listening to and why?
Florence and the Machine. Her songs help me lose myself in making art.
Which living artists do you most admire and why?
I admire Gerard Richter for his use of colour and texture.
Which deceased artist do you most admire and why?
I’m very influenced by the male artists linked with Abstract Expressionism, including Mark Rothko and Hans Hofmann, because of their intimate concern with form, space and colour. At the same time, I am very interested in the theoretical concepts paved by art historians concerned with Gender and Feminism in the history of art.
Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why?
I saw the Mark Rothko Retrospective in Rome, Italy at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in January 2008, and it radicalized my view on how artworks should be grouped together to heighten the visual impact for the viewer. It was also absolutely breathtaking to see so many of his ”Multiform” paintings together in one exhibition.
What is the question you get asked most frequently about your work and how do you answer it?
Q= What do your paintings mean?
A= I don’t have an exact answer to this question, but I always counter it with, “What does it mean to you?” because I am really interested in how viewers perceive and interact with abstraction.
What / who inspired you to be an artist?
Ever since I can remember, I have been drawing or painting, and I think this stems from always seeing my father’s architectural drawings when I was a child. My mother has always been inspiring in her support as well.
Can you tell us about where you make your art and what if any the significance of this location is?
I convert part of my dining room into a makeshift studio that can be spread out everywhere or packed up into boxes and hidden out of the way when necessary. The problem with this is that when I am on an art-creating wave of creativity, the dining room becomes a mess with papers and paints strewn everywhere!
What do you like most about being an artist?
Feeling content and complete every time I create.
What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?
I think every artist’s greatest achievement is having the courage to exhibit their art publicly and allowing their vulnerability to be present in light of the viewers’ feedback and interpretations.
What are your plans for the coming year?
I hope to continuing showing my artwork throughout London.

Artist's statement
My paintings seek to abstract the vast range of human emotions and focus on finding comfort in the visual relationship between the sensuality of form and the beauty of colour. By reusing paper paraphenalia from items bought or found, I hope to reclaim the beauty of the disregarded and better understand the spectacle of colour.
