Profile

As a fashion design student,  body form and movement is really interesting to me. How clothing and fabric can encase a body and move along with it, or restrict it is a great thing to be able to manipulate and experiment with. However, it is the freedom of this movement that interests me most, and what I try to bring to my illustrations. I use paint by either scraping with card or painting with a sponge to register this movement on the paper, before reigning it all in with strong, confident lines of graphite.

Interview

What is your favourite film of all time?

Gladiator - an epic film, and vey emotional

What music are you currently listening to and why?

Love live sessions, Adele in the live lounge at radio 1 and can't get enough of Beyonce at Glastonbury - what a star!!

Which living artists do you most admire and why?

Mode 2 - fashion illustrator, he has a unique style, inspired by comics and graffiti. Describing his work as very anatomy conscious. I love the energy, mood and movement in his work.

Sara Singh - fashion illustrator, her work is very fluid, in watercolour and ink, and has a simplistic elegance about it.

Which deceased artist do you most admire and why?

Rene Gruau - I absolutely love his work. It is incredibly inspirational. The way he draws with a sense of purpose, and also fun and exaggeration to certain details, simply to amplify the beauty of the subject.

Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why?

A David Hockney exhibition a few years ago at the National Portrait museum, where I was able to view his early drawings and sketches, and fully appreciate that art can come in many forms. Sometimes the rawer the better.

What is the question you get asked most frequently about your work and how do you answer it?

Why use that certain media and why on paper? I love the freedom and texture of acrylic, and the coarseness of graphite, but how it can be used to produce such strong bold lines. Paper to me is also a medium, using coloured sheets in a similar tone to the paint I am using and the subject i am drawing.

What / who inspired you to be an artist?

For as long as I can remember I have been a very visual person, at school always been critiqued by my Art GCSE teacher, as he knew best for my direction, to the years I have spent as a Visual merchandiser. However, whilst in my first year at uni (2010/2011) my Vis. Com. tutor Steve, showed a real interest in my work, and how I can improve by showing me a few techniques, and working with me. I will always be forever indebted to him for this advice.

Can you tell us about where you make your art and what if any the significance of this location is?

I am very lucky to have a room in my house with a lot of natural light and space where I can work, where i am surrounded by inspirational images and texts.

What do you like most about being an artist?

I like the feeling I get when I have created something beautiful to look at. And then the sense of achievement and pride I get when someone else compliments my work.

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?

On a personal level, the progression I have made with my work from being at University in my first year.

What are your plans for the coming year?

Just to carry on, on my chosen path of returning to my studies. In my first year at uni I have achieved firsts in most of my modules, and this is both very rewarding and encouraging.
