Profile
With a background in industrial and graphic design Ulrika Bygge incorporates elements of both art and design in her surface illustrations. Her work is inspired by dream worlds, folklore, current events and personal experiences. By combining illustration, printmaking, painting, photography and collage she communicates the essence of these narratives onto prints, wallhangings, one-off wallpapers and urban / interior decoration. She also facilitates creative projects for a range of individuals and community groups and is an active supporter of widening participation and equal opportunities within the arts. Ulrika has lived in several countries including Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom before moving back to her Scandinavian roots, currently living and working on the island of Öland, Sweden.

Interview
What is your favourite film of all time?
Impossible to pick just one: 'Me and You and Everyone We Know', 'Kitchen Stories', '300'.
What music are you currently listening to and why?
Kid Koala - fab fab samples that make me smile, Quantic Soul Orchestra – for dreaming and the beginning of new projects, The Correspondents – get me swinging, Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip – for reassurance, Florence + The Machine for inspiration!
Which living artists do you most admire and why?
Quentin Blake – his drawings make me smile every time, Ralph Steadman – for the sharp dark humour in his work, Anna Alcock – South African artist who inspires me to stay free, Ilon Wikland – for the amazing imagination, compassion and deep forests in her illustrations.
Which deceased artist do you most admire and why?
Alberto Giacometti – for the hunger in his work, Fanny Brate – she was one of the first female artists to get accepted into the Swedish Art Academy at the turn of the century, John Singer Sargent – beautiful portraits, fleshy tones and sparkly eyes.
Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why?
The magical, if slightly unnerving, beauty of Sally Mann’s photographs at Kulturhuset in Stockholm (Spring 2008) stopped me in my tracks and reminded me to enjoy those fleeting moments that can be so difficult to quantify, express or describe.
What is the question you get asked most frequently about your work and how do you answer it?
What are you doing..? I’m thinking!
What / who inspired you to be an artist?
My mother's wall hanging, curiosity, freedom and so many people… mentors, friends, family, strangers.
Can you tell us about where you make your art and what if any the significance of this location is?
I recently moved to Sweden and am settling into my new studio on the island of Öland. The space is warm, clean, beautifully refurbished and close to the sea. It would surprise me if this didn't come through in some way in my creative work. The previous studio in London consisted of a corner in a mannequin factory’s unheated warehouse – cold, damp, dirty, quiet, spacious and liberating! I learnt to work quickly to stay warm.
What do you like most about being an artist?
The freedom, independence, researching, learning, sharing thoughts & experiences, exhilarating journeys, unlikely missions, getting grubby, playing, working with my hands, working with people, unexpected twists, quiet time, experimenting, looking, drawing & making.
What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?
Beginning to work with myself, not against myself.
What are your plans for the coming year?
Continue to settle into living and working here in Sweden, more inspiring collaborative projects and getting inky!
