When Artists Can't Go Out | Episode 2 | En Plein Air

When artists can't go out (where they planned), what do they do?

In this episode we bring together two artists whose work is often inspired by or created during their time spent working outdoors be that in rural, isolated locations or in the moddle of busy, crowded cities. Lachlan Goudie and James Willis discuss how they are working during isolation and how it is influencing their practice, the role of memory in their work and what thier hopes and ambitions are for the Art World post Covid-19.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Lachlan Goudie
is a portrait, still life and landscape Scottish artists based in London. He is an artist and TV presenter and one of the very first artists I had the privilege of working with when we founded the gallery back in 2003. He is an elected member of the member of the Royal Institute of Oil painters. You may well have seen him presenting his art history on the BBC or as a judge on the Big Painting Challenge.

Lachlan Goudie was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1976.  After studying English Literature at Cambridge University he received the Levy-Plumb scholarship, a yearlong painting residency at Christ’s College.

In 1999 Lachlan was awarded the R.S.P. Prize for painting at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, and in 2001 the N.S. MacFarlane prize at the Royal Scottish Academy.  Lachlan graduated in June 2004 from Camberwell College of Arts with a degree in Fine Art and Painting.  He exhibits with the Royal Portrait Society and regularly shows in London, New York and Edinburgh.

James Willis is based in Herdfordshire and is best known for his large views of cities in oil, acrylic and watercolour. He is a tutor at the Sir John Soane Museum and a regular contributor to arts focussed magazine.

"I am a painter of places and buildings. I have a love of architectural landscapes and intrigued by perspective.  My work is concerned with representing the play of light on buildings to create an atmosphere and the way in which a medium, usually oils or watercolours, can be used both figuratively and exploiting the abstract qualities it can offer on a picture surface. Light and colour are essential elements which inspire my paintings and the way they create the personality of a moment in time, I make use of free, impressionistic brush work and an energetic approach tempered with a delicate approach to detail."
