Commissioned by Sir Kenneth A Olisa, to commemorate his year as Master (2010 – 2011) of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists (WCIT), Five Masters, three Wardens and the Clerk by award winning artist Hynek Martinec , celebrates the Livery Company, illustrating its commitment to the City traditions and demonstrating the inclusive nature of its trade. Martinec was asked to create a masterpiece that recognised ‘The best of the old and the best of the new’, one of Ken’s key goals during his year as master. This was achieved through both the inclusion of the 9 sitters and Hynek’s incredible photo realistic techniques.
Art has been a vital component of the City as long as it is possible to explore. Whether chronicling the times, charting the topography or decorating the buildings, artists have laboured to leave their mark. Literally.
The nine portraits which make up the composition were painted over a two year period, commencing with a photography session in 2010. During the process, each sitter was asked to provide 140 characters, Twitter style, to adorn their painting. Each painting is mounted on a Plexiglas frame so that the group 'float' jointly and severally. The painting was unveiled on the 17th October 2012 at the Installation of Michael SK Grant as Master, and then displayed at Fishmongers’ Hall during the Installation dinner. It will now be on permanent display at the WCIT Livery Hall.
