Meet the Artist | Interview with Kelsey Muldoon

Kelsey Muldoon is a fine artist who practices with oil paint. Kelsey's focus is on portraiture, specifically on the relationship between colour and lighting. Using bright colours to create a cohesive but contsrating painting, Kelsey strives to modernise old art forms in her artworks.

1) Which art movement do you consider most influential on your practice?

I’d probably say Pop art for the influence of bold color, and also renaissance for my subject matter and the compositions of the portraits.

2) Where do you go and when to make your best art?

I make my best art at home. I love being around everything that I love and it’s where I’m the most comfortable.

3) How do you describe your 'creative process'?

I either visit galleries around me or if I can’t do that I look at pictures and videos of what I’m interested in and gather as much inspiration as I can. And then I get to work.

4) Which artist, living or deceased, is the greatest inspiration to you?

James Turrell. I love his use of colour and light. His work really stands out to me, I love it.

5) If you weren't an artist, what would you do?

I think I would have gone back to my studies of animal management and gone into that. I love animals but I always had a passion for art that I needed to pursue.

6) What do you listen to for inspiration?

I’ll either just put on my latest playlist or I’ll have a show I’ve watched in the background like, the office

7) If you could own one artwork, and money was no object, which piece would you acquire?

I’d choose michealanglo’s work on the sixtenth chapel. I’d love to be surrounded by that every day

8) If your dream museum or collection owner came calling, which would it be?

The louvre. I’ve never been but I would love to. I love the architecture and the work inside.

9) What is your key piece of advice for artists embarking on a fine art or creative degree today?

Do something that you find truly interesting. There is no point doing something you don’t care about because you think that’s what other people want from you.

10) What is your favourite book of all time (fiction or non fiction)?

The outsiders by S.E Hinton. It really just stuck with me from the first time I read it when I was 16.

11) If you could hang or place your artwork in one non traditional art setting, where would it be?

I’m going to say on a rocket ship. It will literally be out of this world.

12) What was the biggest lesson your university course or time studying taught you?

That no matter what someone might say or push for, stick to what you’re passionate about. And eventually people will start to be passionate about it too.

13) And finally, if we were to fast forward 10 years, where would we find you?

Hopefully in a different country in a random city just experiencing the world and creating art wherever I go
