Since I began travelling I have become increasingly fascinated and inspired by the simple beauty of nature. This has led to me trying out landscape painting, something I never thought I would do a few years ago! Lockdown has provided the perfect opportunity for me to spend hours walking, contemplating the shapes, colours and moods of the different times of day. I have been trying to create interesting compositions using subjects we would probably overlook in our everyday schedule, but maybe these small, sketchy paintings will remind us to stop and appreciate even the most simple of pleasures during these difficult times! Borrowing the technique I use for some of my portrait style ‘hollow’ paintings, it’s possible to create this very stylised, print-like effect using ink-wash and masking fluid. I begin with the sky, then I mask off the areas I want to remain light, and so on until I’m left with the shadows. I then peel it all away revealing the image. This is very satisfying as you don’t really know how it's going to look until this point, it can also be frustrating as it doesn’t turn out well sometimes. If I feel it's necessary I will add further washes and details, but sometimes I just leave it as is. This is Bingham Park in Sheffield, the trees rise up very high over the path and create a canopy almost. I'm particularly happy with the composition in this one and love the long, thin tree trunks.
