Meet the Artist | Interview with Isabel Einsiedl

Isabel Einsiedl is a contemporary artist from Germany, working around the world to make beautiful artworks. Isabel has a classical art education and works with many different styles, but she prefers to create colourful portraits of humans and animals.

1) Which art movement do you consider most influential on your practice?

Expressionism, I like strong brush strokes and colourful portraits.

2) Where do you go and when to make your best art?

Whenever possible I paint outside in nature, sometimes near the ocean. I like natural surroundings. In the winter I prefer my studio in Germany.

3) How do you describe your 'creative process'?

It's not something I think about consciously. Each year I get better at letting everything come through whatever wants to flow through my hand on the canvas. Sometimes I plan something, but It can end up very different in the end. So I am mainly showing up in front of the canvas and seeing what happens. Sometimes I include some symbolism that means something in feng shui in my painting to improve the energy of the room.

4) Which artist, living or deceased, is the greatest inspiration to you?

Vincent Desiderio. He is a living master and a great teacher.

5) If you weren't an artist, what would you do?

I am also an energy healer and feng shui coach. I never stop learning from nature. I would also like to become a gardener if I had more time - and grow my own food and create huge colourful gardens.

6) What do you listen to for inspiration?

The John Dalton Art Podcast and music by Andrea Bocelli.

7) If you could own one artwork, and money was no object, which piece would you acquire?

The Mona Lisa - when I saw it I was completely amazed. Leonardo DaVinci says: “The eye, the window of the soul, is the chief means whereby the understanding can most fully and abundantly appreciate the infinite works of Nature; and the ear is second.” This is the job of the artist. Show the soul through the painting.

8) If your dream museum or collection owner came calling, which would it be?

Stefan Simchowitz, and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

9) What is your key piece of advice for artists embarking on a fine art or creative degree today?

Develop your own style. Forget what didn’t resonate with you. Don’t copy or paint what someone else suggests.

10) What is your favorite book of all time (fiction or non fiction)?

The Artist Way, Robert Henri.

11) If you could hang or place your artwork in one non traditional art setting, where would that be?

I would like to have huge projections of my art all over Paris during the nighttime.

12) What was the biggest lesson your university course or time studying taught you?

Discipline. It needs years to improve, but you can also enjoy the process. Feeling is understanding.

13) And finally, if we were to fast forward 10 years, where would we find you?

I will be in famous collections all over the world. And open a huge center for Artists in Costa Rica, where people can meet, make art and eat tropical fruits, music all day. Plant 50000 trees. Remove plastic from the ocean. Inspire millions of people with my work.
