Meet the Artist | Interview with Alice Lenkiewicz

Alice Lenkiewicz is an artist inspired by her surroundings, inner thoughts and emotions and is interested in developing art out of a state of conscious presence. Enjoying peace, stillness and ambiguity within nature as well as observing the delicate contemporary sociological climate, Alice enjoys exploring these dichotomies in order to create concoctions of emotional and visual experience portrayed through a variety of materials.

1) Which art movement do you consider most influential on your practice?

The Renaissance and Postimpressionism.

2) Where do you go and when to make your best art?

Depending on what I am making, it will be a variety of places. Usually, if I am painting indoors then I like to use an easel depending on the size of the canvas. If I am painting on paper or sewing, I am quite happy with a table. If I am painting landscapes then I like to paint on site with the view there to paint in front of me.

3) How do you describe your 'creative process'?

Most of my paintings are paint or textile based so the process starts with deciding on my idea which can be inspired by many things. I rarely prepare my images. I just go with the idea and flow of feelings and my work will usually evolve as I go along. I enjoy not always knowing what the outcome will be.

4) Which artist, living or deceased, is the greatest inspiration to you?

Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, Manet, William Blake, Frida Kahlo, Vanessa Bell, Picasso, Odilon Redon, Fra Angelico, Marc Chagall.

5) If you weren't an artist, what would you do?

I would probably have been a dancer or an actress. I enjoyed contemporary, jazz dance when I was younger.

6) What do you listen to for inspiration?

There is such a variety of music I enjoy. From Rick and roll, blues, jazz, folk and classical. I tend to enjoy world music these days. I like something a bit different, using a variety of instruments and styles. I love the singer, Concha Buika. I also love listening to poetry, particularly Jack Kerouac and Kate Tenpest.

7) If you could own one artwork, and money was no object, which piece would you acquire?

So difficult as there are many I enjoy but if it had to be one it would probably be one of Marc Chagall’s blue paintings.

8) If your dream museum or collection owner came calling, which would it be?

I would love to show my work at Frieze. My dream would be to exhibit at The Tate and The National Gallery.

9) What is your key piece of advice for artists embarking on a fine art or creative degree today?

Believe in yourself and if it is your passion you will find a way and succeed. Just keep going.

10) What is your favorite book of all time (fiction or non fiction)?

The House of the Spirits by Isabelle Allende.

11) If you could hang or place your artwork in one non traditional art setting, where would that be?

I would enjoy exhibiting in an old run down Manor House or warehouse or a castle.

12) What was the biggest lesson your university course or time studying taught you?

It gave me self confidence and the ability to realize if I worked hard I could achieve things.

13) And finally, if we were to fast forward 10 years, where would we find you?

Successful and independent financially with my art.
