Meet the Artist | Interview with Daniel de Saint-Yon

Daniel de Saint-Yon is a Belgian artist whose paintings have been exhibited both nationally and in Japan. His artistic practice is informed and inspired by the history and cultural interaction between Europe and Japan. De Saint-Yon's figurative compositions, which mostly portray women, begin with drawings and sketches from life. He creates using oils, India ink, and amber on canvas or wood.

1) Which art movement do you consider most influential on your practice?

the 60s hyperrealism.

2) Where do you go and when to make your best art?

In my workshop, every day with my models.

3) How do you describe your 'creative process'?

I stick to the sources and fundamentals of oil painting! I love the sharp realism of Van Eyck put at the service of an objective psychological study of the models.

4) Which artist, living or deceased, is the greatest inspiration to you?

Gérard SCHLOSSER (living) and Francis Bacon (deceased).

5) If you weren't an artist, what would you do?

I would read books.

6) What do you listen to for inspiration?

When I paint, I need total silence around me!

7) If you could own one artwork, and money was no object, which piece would you acquire?

A painting of Jan Van Eyck.

8) If your dream museum or collection owner came calling, which would it be?

Tate Modern.

9) What is your key piece of advice for artists embarking on a fine art or creative degree today?

To have a lot of patience, time and enough money to survive.

10) What is your favourite book of all time (fiction or non fiction)?

Spinoza’s Ethics.

11) If you could hang or place your artwork in one non traditional art setting, where would it be?

 St Pancras International Railway Station.

12) What was the biggest lesson your university course or time studying taught you?

To deepen the things of time.

13) And finally, if we were to fast forward 10 years, where would we find you?

In the same place as today, in my workshop.
