“I want my work to be personal and symbolic of my experiences. However, I aim to present my ideas in such a way that they will resonate with others on many levels. I don’t want to create an image that is too direct. I want a piece to be mysterious and to draw the viewers’ attention, making them think and to evoke an inquisitive, even emotional response. I don’t want my work to be interesting for a minute. I want people to be able to see something else each time they look at the work.”

My current practice is about my personal journey and battles I have faced. The life cycle of the butterfly is the quintessence of metamorphosis and they are often viewed as symbols representing journeys, life, hope, endurance and change - the perpetual motion of nature…and so much more. I felt they were the perfect subject to focus on throughout this journey. Their lives are ephemeral and cyclic but I want their detailed beauty to be noticed and preserved, almost contained within the artwork frame.

The presentation of my pieces is key. I have spent much time experimenting with how to extend the impact beyond the marked surface. The way fluorescent paint and light respond has been key to this concept. This concept will feature in all of my new pieces.

I want to show through my art and reflect upon I have broken this into different series’ and will continue to do so. There will also be ‘stand-alone’ pieces on the same theme that also play with light and fluorescent paint.

  • ‘Eternal Transience’Series

Inspired by the haunting image of butterflies pinned and mounted within a frame, yet never losing their beauty and iridescence I have created this series of miniatures. I have been exploring ways to extend a work beyond the surface and these pieces are all mounted in such a way as to create a subtle fluorescent glow.  The life of a butterfly is short but its unique beauty cannot fade. The life cycle of the butterfly is the quintessence of metamorphosis and they are often viewed as symbols representing journeys, life, hope, endurance and change - the perpetual motion of nature.  This work has a personal resonance with me and I hope that every person who views these pieces each sees something different and my hope is that this work will give as much pleasure as it has given me in its creation.  Groups of the circles will range in size from 2 to 52. 52 being such a significant number; 52 weeks in a year, 52 cards in a pack.

Watercolour paintings on primed wood board with fluorescent sides

My new work focuses on patterns on butterfly details and their symbolism. This piece is a Watercolour study where I was experimenting with ways to achieve a transparent layered finish reminiscent of butterfly wings. Butterflies are used a lot to symbolise recovery journeys and other aspects of life. I am using the butterfly imagery as a means of expressing my own journey this past year and also as inspiration for new patterns which underpin my practice.  The edges of this piece are painted using a fluorescent paint. The use of such a bright colour allows the image to extend onto the wall and acts as a light responsive 'frame' depending on the atmosphere around the painting. The square surface is extended making this piece a real statement on a plain wall.
