Situationisn’t, work inspired by a Society of Spectacles | DegreeArt.com The Original Online Art Gallery

In his first major solo show Joe Upton presents an eclectic range of works using 3D Film and Mixed-Media.  In this week long exhibition Upton invites an audience to engage in ‘pseudo-activities’ which break the conventional role of audience participation and questions the social impact of media and popular culture.

Inspired by the avant-garde movement of Situationism, Upton transposes the theory of The Society of the Spectacle to the modern day. He questions our role as producers and consumers of culture and explores themes of novelty value and commodity fetishism.

With a blend of irony and contradictionSituationisn’t... examines’ the spectacle’ of modern life and shares Upton’s passion for mass cultural products and social theory.
