Over the August Bank Holiday weekend, guests at Coworth Park – the Dorchester Collection’s Georgian country house hotel near Ascot and Windsor – were welcomed to a special showcase of bronze horse sculptures by Swedish sculptor Johannes Nielsen.
Set against the backdrop of Coworth Park’s world-class polo fields and equestrian facilities, Nielsen’s works felt entirely at home. The hotel, already a long-standing collector of his sculptures, provided an environment where art and setting spoke directly to one another. The presentation offered visitors the chance to see and acquire Nielsen’s latest pieces while also appreciating the collection permanently held at Coworth.
Sculpting the Timeless Horse
Nielsen’s sculptures are widely admired for the way they balance strength and serenity. Across the weekend, guests discovered how his pared-back, elongated forms captured the horse’s spirit with a quiet intensity. Whether standing in stillness or in implied motion, the works conveyed a timeless quality – at once powerful and meditative.
The Artist in Conversation
A highlight of the weekend was a filmed interview in which Nielsen reflected on his practice and inspirations. He discussed what first drew him to the horse as a subject, how he achieves harmony between dynamism and calm in his work, and the personal influences that continue to shape his vision. Speaking about Coworth Park, he remarked on how natural it felt to present these sculptures in a place so deeply connected with equestrian life. Watch now
A Meeting of Place and Practice
The showcase ran from Friday 22 August until Monday 25 August, with the gallery team on hand daily to welcome visitors. Guests were able to explore Nielsen’s work in the unique context of a hotel that has long celebrated equestrian heritage. Many remarked on the way the sculptures resonated with the polo fields beyond, creating a dialogue between landscape, sport, and art.
For those who attended, the weekend was a rare opportunity to experience Johannes Nielsen’s horses in a setting that amplified their spirit – a perfect alignment of artist, subject, and place.
