Meet the Artist | Interview with Tianyin Wang

Tianyin Wang is an artist working primarily in charcoal drawing. Born in 1986, he is currently based in London, UK. He received his BA (Illustration) from Arts University Bournemouth in 2009, receiving a New Blood Award from D&AD the same year. Between 2009-2015 he worked as a digital-based editorial illustrator with prestigious clients including Oxford University Press, Bloomsbury Publishing and STYLIST magazine. From 2015, Tianyin started to develop his unique charcoal drawing technique using a combination of different charcoals to achieve a distinctive look. This unique style is best described as “motion impressionism”.

1) Which art movement do you consider most influential on your practice?

None of them, I always focus on myself, and create what I think is beautiful.

2) Where do you go and when to make your best art?

Nature is always my best inspiration and resource.

3) How do you describe your 'creative process'?

I do everything freehand, without any guidelines, this helps me to catch the motion and energy a lot better. I normally start from the point which interests me the most, then move on from it.

4) Which artist, living or deceased, is the greatest inspiration to you?

Takeuchi Seihō

5) If you weren't an artist, what would you do?

I believe I was born to do this, nothing else.

6) What do you listen to for inspiration?

My answer might surprise you, I don't listen to anything, when creating, I focus on the paper, that moment, only the paper, charcoal and me.

7) If you could own one artwork, and money was no object, which piece would you acquire?

Any animal topic work from Takeuchi Seihō, I desire to own.

8) If your dream museum or collection owner came calling, which would it be?

I never think about this, from my point, there is no difference between museums, collection owners or private owners. I appreciate anyone who comes calling, and treat every one/every project the same. I give all I can give.

9) What is your key piece of advice for artists embarking on a fine art or creative degree today?

Know yourself, understanding what you are good at. Natural is always better than deliberate.

10) What is your favorite book of all time (fiction or non fiction)?

The Road to Serfdom.

11) If you could hang or place your artwork in one non traditional art setting, where would that be?

I prefer evolution a lot more than revolution, I wish they can be place in a traditional art setting.

12) What was the biggest lesson your university course or time studying taught you?

explore yourself and be yourself.

13) And finally, if we were to fast forward 10 years, where would we find you?

in 10 years, I am sure you would find me in English country side, in the middle of no where, where robin birds can wake me up in the morning.
