I am very excited that Degree Art will be launching my first ever sculpture, 'City of Gold' (gold bar), at the Affordable Art Fair in Hampsteda, May 11-14th. The replica gold bars are engraved with the outline of the London skyline, laser-cut into the surface of the bar (with one small difference due to legal reasons! Look for the Gherkin!). The title, my signature and embossed logo are engraved on the underneath of the bar. The bar is made to mimic a real gold bullion bar in size and weight. It feels reaassuringly heavy to hold. Making the bars is complex. A mix of of brass and copper powder mixed with resin is poured into a rubber mould to give the gold effect. A steel core give the bar is weighty feel. The resin mix is then sanded and polished.. I became obsessed with the artistic beauty of gold bars when I first saw the iconic film ’The Italian Job’ starring Michael Cane. The plot featured a daring gold bullion heist. I also loved ‘Money Heist’, the recent Netflix drama about an audiacious gold bar robbery. I’m pleased to declare I have no plans to take my career down this route! But I am proud of the new creations. I love the shape and angles of gold bars - there’s something very tactile about them too. I wanted to portray London (my favourite city) as a glamorous, attractive city, rich in history and culture, hence the London skyline being embossed into the surface. The gold bars feature the London skyline laser cut into the top, and are made with a unique brass /resin mix to mimic the feel of a genuine gold bar. Each bar is presented on a purple, velvet cushion to add to their luxurious aura, embroidered with the title, signature and edition number.
