"My work is very process-driven. I work intuitively allowing the composition to reveal itself as I continue to weave elements and layers into it. I work in layers a lot -it’s an important aspect of my work. As the composition comes to fruition, I draw upon childhood memories, flavours or recent stories, weave them into the narrative and begin writing the accompanying title which is a significant part of the work. Born and raised in Hong Kong and moved to the UK when I was 15, the subtleties of the merging of East and West, through landscapes, cultures, and cuisines often seep into my practice, resulting in diasporic narratives. I’m interested in the intangibility of memories and their fickle reconstruction. I want to highlight the use of oil pastels in this piece, specifically their textures under different lighting, which may initially go unnoticed. There are a lot of textural details and uninhibited mark-making interwoven into the layers of this piece, likening to a childlike approach. It kind of mimics the layers and flavours in a birthday cake, deflated balloons and fallen confetti strings at the end of the party. This piece is about the sentimentality of childhood birthdays"
