title- The Duchess medium- Acrylic, Spray Paint, Indian Ink, Oil Pastel, Emulsion, Copolymer Transfer, Wood stain on canvas I chose to use The Duchess of Cambridge as my subject because she has recently become pregnant; the Story was plastered all over the news and tabloids. It is this media coverage, which starts off my creative production. I use the power of text and the spoken word to produce images. These images are interpretations of events and happenings. I’m interested in how one interprets images, a piece of text or dialogue. For me the most important part is how I interpret these, especially the events and happenings being depicted in the media. My images stem from these interpretations of events. I use my past life experiences to help strengthen my interpretational knowledge. I reference and take inspiration from films and iconic image. It supplies an element that, hopefully, people can recognize and relate to. In the painting The Duchess, I wanted to create an image that doesn’t exist in the public eye. I create simulations and scenarios from my conscious mind, and from them I play on the notion of what is real and what is not. The aim of the painting was to create an image that would create its own reality. My works are simulations; simulations threaten the difference between the true and the false, the real and the imaginary. They are made up scenes that create their own reality; the situations being depicted in the images don’t exist in reality other than within themselves. The production of the images has allowed the images to exist, allowing them to create their own reality. I wanted to portray a personal and intimate side of the Duchess. It’s a possible scenario being depicted of what it could be like in her household, as Her and Prince William celebrate this joyful occasion. I wanted to try and capture an inside private moment. The aim was to capture the natural and create a beautiful image of her, celebrating her pregnancy.
