I have more souls than one. Worlds Apart. Oil paint, graphite and image transfers on canvas. 100cm by 120cm This paintings depicts a moment between my Grandmother “Old Lady” and my cousin Louise when she was little. Our Grandparents came over to the UK for the first time to meet us when we were very young. This scene captures a bittersweet memory. As my Grandmother speaks with Lulu in the Akan dialect Twi, Louise looks on, looking totally lost. For me this scene captures both a longing for connection and a sense of disconnection. A feeling well known to many members of diaspora. Surrounding my Grandmother are an array of image transfers capturing moments from her life in Ghana while the images surrounding Lulu show memories of her upbringing in the UK. Despite inhabiting the same space, they are surrounded by vastly contrasting memories and cultural experiences leaving them worlds apart.
