Contemporary + cool portrait of an 18th century lady at a festival. Inspired by street style and surrealism. Three similar portraits have been commissioned by the artist for permanent display in the prestigious Bankside Hotel, London. This is a portrait of a real person who once lived. By reviving the portrait and breathing life back into it, the subject is resurrected and brought back to life in the 21st century. Where our gaze would have been on the original portrait as a viewer, within these works the gaze is reversed and it appears to be the subject who now looks upon us. Through giving this 18th century work a new lease of life, the sitter lives on and regains a precious new lease of life. The distance of time, and questions of social status are raised, giving freedom to a formerly restricted lady of prominent position. The work is set within a stunning bespoke deep white box frame (similar to those on the images of Bankside Portrait Gallery attached). Dimensions are those of framed work, the height of the image itself is 80cm. These new works are deconstructed and vandalised old masters, employing media as human hair, makeup, false eyelashes, in order to revive and bring historic characters back to life. Underpinned by her new book Women Can’t Paint, the artist introduces contemporary symbolism that contrasts between the two eras of 2018 and 1750. Similar works by the artist have been commissioned for the prestigious and supercool new Bankside Hotel in London, adj. to Tate Modern.
