The Shaman’s Shack was created during Gareth Bunting’s residency at Sachaca Centro del Arte, an ecological art retreat in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Immersed in the rhythms of the jungle, Bunting learned to paint with natural pigments sourced directly from the environment — earth, leaves, minerals, and water. This process marked a profound turning point in his practice: a return to material honesty and an embodied connection with nature itself. During the residency, after several weeks of illness brought on by the harshness of the rainforest climate, Bunting experienced a moment of physical and spiritual renewal through a traditional ayahuasca ceremony. That moment of healing — both humbling and revelatory — inspired The Shaman’s Shack: a visual meditation on surrender, recovery, and interconnectedness. Rendered in Bunting’s signature brush-and-ink style, the piece fuses intricate mark-making with organic fluidity. His technique — built on patience, repetition, and flow — mirrors natural processes: rivers branching, roots weaving, spores unfurling. Here, the ink behaves like a living entity, bleeding, merging, and resisting control. It reflects Bunting’s ongoing dialogue between discipline and chaos, structure and intuition — between the human mind and the untamed world around it. The imagery evokes a dwelling half-real, half-spiritual: a shelter of vines, light, and breath. The shaman’s hut becomes both a literal place and a psychological space — a sanctuary of transformation. The forest appears to grow from within it, suggesting that nature and consciousness are one and the same. At its heart, The Shaman’s Shack is about reconnection: to the body, to the earth, and to the quiet intelligence that exists beyond words. Through his characteristic blend of precision and spontaneity, Bunting captures the moment when the external landscape becomes internal — when art, nature, and self momentarily align.
