My work is Abstract Expressionist.

I paint not what I see of the visible world, but how I feel it to be. It is not a literal description of a place, but a feeling of a place and how one is affected by that environment. My inspiration comes from the land, sea and sky-scapes, music that I listen to classical, rhythm and blues, jazz, or colours that I see in every day life. I like to work on a large scale when possible, as this gives me more freedom of movement, and allows me to be experimental. My preferred medium is oil on canvas or paper. The paintings are allowed to happen to come into being.

I have two styles of painting. My 'Colourfield' paintings these were part of the Abstract Expressionist movement where overall consistency of form and process is prime and colour is the subject itself.

Secondly it is the strength of the  mark, worked with knifes, rags and brushes, oil bars. Some are made with rapid expressive movement, and the marks are worked into or overlaid. Sometimes the marks are more considered, gentle, depending on subject matter , and feeling. Occasionally the two overlap!

Artists that inspire me are Willem de Kooning for the fluidity of the paint and the power of the brush strokes. Mark Rothko whose colours envelop you in a vast smothering embrace.

Franz Kline, his paintings 'elbow' their way into the room in which they are hung. J.M.W.Turner for his magical light in the landscape. Vincent Vangogh for caring so much, and Gorky for not caring, Rembrandt for his deep understanding of how to paint flesh especially 'knees'! Michelangelo for 'being as one' with white Carrera marble.

Quotes that stay with me 'A finished painting is or should be, a reminder of what not to do again' Elaine de Kooning. 'A painting without black is like food without salt' Elaine de Kooning, 'Painting is the best game I've ever played' Frank Auerbach
