Speculative: Adjective; 'engaged in, expressing, or based on conjecture rather than knowledge.' '(of an investment) involving a high risk of loss' There is a trope in Sci-Fi writing of ‘Terraforming’ where speculators from the future travel to far distant planets, and through destructive and constructive processes transform them into habitats for future colonisation. Speculative Fiction occupies the territory between Sci-Fi and realism where other possible futures can be explored beyond our imagination. These are also paintings borne out of acts of intervention. Paint layered down and then activated with mediums and gravity, causing them to flow and merge in unexpected ways, much as land is shaped by tectonics, weather and human action. They are also reminiscent of places; both imagined and maybe remembered from another painting, a film or writing. Some are sci-fi, some cinematic, some more realistic and some barely need enhancing at all, a readymade landscape that just needed to be framed.
