Luke M Walker
Artist in Residence at Bankside Hotel Winter 2018-19
Luke M Walker’s art practice derives from an exploration of the environment primarily through walking and recording. The recent ‘Datascapes’ series involved collecting specific data on each walk, the length, the pace, the altitude or number of steps etc. and translating the data into a painting which become physical representations of the momentary act of walking itself. These ‘potential landscapes’ are also paintings of time and distance and it is these additional spatial and temporal qualities that he is keen to express in his work, whether through constructed landscapes or from a direct observation of the environment.
They act as a record of both the activity of the artist in the landscape but also in the studio. In preparation for an exhibition 2018, he gained access to some of the city’s highest landmarks, from Battersea PowerStation, Vauxhall, to St Pauls to The Sky Gardens, painting the fluid nature of the city as is morphs its way along the Thames. Transience expressed from the singular perspective of one of its current citizens and in the complex physical structures of the city itself.
In 2018/19 he was selected as the first ‘Maker in Residence’ at Bankside Hotel creating a body of work expressing this dynamic new quarter as it undergoes its current transformation.
He is also a founding member of the Wilderness Arts Collective, a new group of artists highlighting discussions in and around the preservation and protection of the natural environment. His relationship with the landscape has changed, and what once might have been described as homage to the environment has now become something more adversarial, with each body of work beginning to question the value of human activity; whether this is the construction of our cities, our stewardship of the environment or the role of the artist as a witness and how this can be expressed, particularly but not exclusively, through painting.
Luke M. Walker currently resides in London. He is also an Interior & Spatial Designer and lecturer on art and design. He has been painting and exhibiting his works regularly since 2008 and completed an MA in Fine Art at City & Guilds of London Art School in 2014.
