New York University (BA Individualised Study: Design, Psychology & Advertising , 2007)

Of Katachi (‘katachi’ meaning shape/form) is the creation of Lana Matsuyama, contemporary painter and sculptor. Based in London,
she specialises in abstract mixed media paintings, and aims to retain a sense of minimalism in her work from a distance, yet simultaneously creating movement, emotion and complexity through an exploration of color, repetition and texture. She challenges the viewer’s sense of depth/space and perception, and uses shapes informed by design, architecture, urban development and the natural world. Japanese influences such as wabi-sabi come into play as she examines the practice of making as an endless process of layering adjusting, uncovering and building. She embraces imperfection and
impermanence in her work.

Lana studied art, design, psychology and advertising at New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualised Study and graduated with high honors. Professionally, she worked as a designer and strategist at the world’s leading online fine art resource as well as an award-winning interactive agency in New York before founding her own studio, Design Pool (wearedesignpool.com), where she now leads a talented team of multi-disciplinary creatives. Lana’s expansion into fine art is a natural progression from her background in design; her forms and compositions as well as her process as an artist are informed by her approach to graphic design and digital illustration.
