James J Cowland
I was born in Tunbridge Wells, 1987. I studied Fine Art Painting at Brighton between 2010 and 2013.
I have showed aptitude for painting since primary school. After diversifying my creative output in foundation at Central Saint Martins, I found that my attention always returned to drawing and painting as a means of exploring my ideas. With an emphasis on bolstering my technical ability and learning how to coherently develop and contextualize my ideas, I sought to study further.
I am currently making work that explores the development of technologies and structures for the purpose of defense. These structures, futuristic in their time, but now redundant and corroded, stand testament to an ever developing, and accelerating state of power. Alongside this obsolescence and decay, a sense of structure, of scale; the representation of physical space we carve around ourselves – spaces reflective of internal thoughts and feelings – is important to my practice.
