"There are many things we cannot ever know, things about which we can only have beliefs". (Locke 1632-1704) My practice explores the philosophical concept of empiricism. Knowledge gained through direct sensory perception. I begin by investigating the qualities inherent within the abstraction and unison of multiple experiences of perception. Either simple or complex in nature, both can lead to ideas that are independent of such previous experiences, yet are still validated through the connective authority from which they derive. "We are heavily restricted in what facts we can know because these facts must be based on direct sense perception". (Hume 1711- 1776) Our beliefs, such as those obtained through indirect mass media perception, are therefore founded on probability, not fact. The mass medias representation or communication of people of influence, or fame, is rarely experienced by the populace directly. This limiting process negates our ability to gain a truly fact based understanding arrived at through pure unbiased circumstance. Our conclusions are therefore subjective, not definite or reliable. "Mass media is really a tool for constructing people's consciousness on a mass scale. So the way the masses think and behave can be dictated to a considerable extent by those who control the media". (Marcuse 1898-1979) My practice intends to promote an awareness of this illiberal condition, through the unison of historical and contemporary compositions that aesthetically correspond with, or share a sense of physical similarity yet originate from either ideologically opposing, or complimentary backgrounds. The resulting non reality encourages an introspective undertaking from the audience relative to the relationship between what is believed to be known, and what is actually known. The re-worked pseudo compositions act only as a point of departure to afford the viewer the ability to understand how the mass media, and the democratic elect manipulate such mass produced forms of social information to bring about their own agenda.
