Dips and Hollows come in and out of being in the ebb and flow of subtle energies. They form in the space between us and the world, between the foot and the ground and even our breath creates currents of subtle energy in the world around us, just by moving gently between inside and outside. Dips and hollows are places of possibility.
I use the maleable paint in oil pigment sticks to make these paintings which enables me to include the immediacy of touch, in my marks and enables me to engage and explore explore directly with the subtle energies that create dips and hollows.
Beaten Paths move and change all the time and their slow formation imbues them with a profound energy. They are formed by quiet actions, repeated small movements over and over again from above (human beings, animals, leaves, sun, bicycles) and below (worms, insects, microorganisms) and in between the beauty and patina of a beaten path is created.
Drawings: These drawings explore the moving energies and shapes of the earth on beaten paths. Graphite and natural ochres are rubbed in and rubbed out of the paper, over and over, echoing the ever changing exchange of energies from above and below the earth by which a beaten path is created.
Interactive Installation: To explore this in a different, more direct way I created a 4m earth path for people to walk along using earth from the east end of London and fruit and vegetable crates from Bethnal Green market. In walking along this path people were echoing all the journeys of the others who had come to East End in past whilst creating a new beaten path with their energy. Some people even chose to walk along it barefoot as you will see:
(It's a bit quiet at first but it gets louder & clearer)
